KevÀÀn Iloa / Spring Joy

KevÀÀn iloa / Spring joy

Minna LehvÀslaiho, Luciana Mariano, Kikka Nyrén

2. – 19.5.2024

Opening of the exhibition: Wednesday 1 May, 14 – 17

Spring, the moment that all Finnish residents have been waiting for, brings light and color back to their hearts and minds. The colors, the variations of light and shadow in art, partly unite and separate the works of Kikka, Minna and Luciana. However, the atmosphere and the playful, naive outlook on life create common paths for these friends in the world of art. Individually, their art differs, but combined like this, it evokes the same warm, springtime atmosphere. This exhibition will certainly immerse you in the playfulness and joy of the Finnish spring.

About the artists:

Minna LehvĂ€slaiho is an illustrator, naive artist, art teacher, and scientist from Kauniainen. She likes to create happy art, and in her paintings even houses are happy and kind. Minna’s preferred media are acrylics, ink, and watercolors. Minna is a member of Finnish Naive Artists, Kuvittajat, and Freelance Graafikot. A two-time postcard artist of the year, she loves to illustrate postcards and postage stamps.

Born in 1971 and raised in SĂŁo Paulo, Brazil, Luciana Mariano is the third generation of naive artists in her family. Everyone around her did some art: grandmother, uncles, mother, but only as a hobby. She made a career in the corporate market and painted only in her spare time. Until she was 38, feeling ashamed of her childish trait, she discarded everything she painted immediately after finishing. In 2008, her production became more intense, leading to her first exhibition. Since then, she has been showing and selling her art in many countries around the world. In 2018, she moved to Finland, and in 2023, she became a Finnish citizen. She is now devoting herself full-time to restarting her career in Europe. Finland is finally the place she loves to call “her forever home”.

Kikka Nyrén: I paint with acrylics on canvas. Besides paintings, I also create sculptures in ceramics. In my paintings the world is at peace. With my art, I seek connection with strangers. We are different, which could make us rich if we choose so. I believe humans should respect nature (which we are part of), instead of destroying the place we live in. I believe animals are our brothers and sisters. My bright colors assure that there will be spring after the long and gray winter. Born in 1951 in Helsinki, Finland. Currently living in Lahti, Finland.

Friends from Helsinki: all invited! It will be a pleasure seeing you there!

Opening: 01.05, from 2 til 5pm.

Living with differences

9/12 - Living with differences - – Luciana Mariano © 2023. Painting available at MakslaXO Gallery, Riga – Latvia.

9/12

The 9th painting of this series is called “Living with differences”. Although this series was made during my residency at the Serlachius Museum Residency, and my reflection was done around the challenges of my own immigration to Finland, the paintings seem to me now reaching much wider comprehension about the matter. By the time I was producing them, I knew that the same concept could be shared in different situations of disruptive, such as a divorce, a change of jobs, house, city or even death. The current world situation brought my ponderations into a wider spectrum, where the political and cultural factors play also an important point of consideration. Living with differences means adapting. Also means allowing diversities to thrive together. It plays both in the individual, personal allowance to existence but also in the collective force, since we are all bound and connected in the same planet and we are the same species with a pleiad of diverse cultures, religions, contexts, stories. We cannot push others out of existence in order to exist without any discomfort nor disagreement. We cannot cease to be because others a claim the right to settle in. A war, in the 21st century, sounds to me that we are refusing to evolve as a society and as human beings. A genocide and a colonial mindset makes it all even more unreasonable, primitive, despicable. The painting shows the beauty and the ugliness in the possibility of allowing those differences to co-exist. But above that, it reinforces the idea of necessary and possible peaceful and comfortable co-existance. We can still thrive and be sheltered. Adapt and find balance. Allow and be granted with acceptance.
Extreme individuality and separation builds walls and not homes. Exposes greed and not kindness nor intelligence. Zionism must end. Humanity must prevail over insanity, selfishnesses and violence.

A extrema individualidade e separação constroem muros e nĂŁo casas. ExpĂ”em a ganĂąncia e nĂŁo a gentileza, nem a inteligĂȘncia. O sionismo deve acabar. A humanidade deve prevalecer sobre a insanidade, os egoĂsmos e a violĂȘncia.

Old Times

Good old days - 30x40 - 2023

Often we meet and greet people on automatic gear. There is no eye contact, no hugs, not even a hand shake. We talk but it’s all rhetorical speech, we have no intention to really know how the person is doing, what is making him/her happy or miserable. We blame it on our scarsety of time, not without it being true; the age of information has sucked our lifes to the scary times described by the genius Charles Chaplin on Modern Times. We live mechanically, working to surviving and surviving to work. Social Media have very little to do with socializing and even less on being a media, it is more like a dead end burden we feel obliged to attend and respond to. We are being slaved by our cepllphones. Special moments have been neglected to second or third priority, if at all a priority. We now get emotional by watching tiny videos on tiny screens, just before continuing all the meaningless compulsory activities that took over our days and lifes. It feels like we have no choice. We are exhausted and it feels like everyone else is living a better life that the one we are. It is difficult to choose what we want when we have to do what we must. The new phone, the new car, the new next thing that will grant us the new debt, but not the peace we should be gaining. Most of us are not even struggling about the fancy things, the majority of humanity is still trying to figure out where they will sleep tonight or what their next meal will be, if it will at all be. Where did we go wrong?
And how to step out of this madness?
Few of us have the luxury to plan ahead. Only for today I know what to do: I will paint. And tonight, for sure, I will watch Modern Times. It seems that the fella knew what he was playing about. Art has the answer, and hopefully it will redeem us.

Listen to the music and see.

A dinner out of this world

The flawless setting. Table is immaculately set, candles are lit, the wine is just at the perfect temperature, prize winning harvest, bold and tasty!

The house is clean and cozy, the exquisite cuisine spreads its scents through the dining room, enhancing the appetite, inviting for the amazing meal about to be devoured.

Comfortable chairs and the the freshly pressed linen table cloth invites the guests to the feast. Shiny delicate china, silver services and cutlery, everything set and served with dedicated good taste.

The walls display, on warm and welcoming wallpapers, the art and the time that are suspended in thought for this special occasion.

Transparent curtains fall gracefully all the way to the floor.

A red chrystal steals the impressive view. The pendulus of the clock, also static, dare not to disturb the moment. Everything is ready, silent, awaits.

Except the tail of the interesting blue beast under the table.

It anxiously swings, awaiting.

As the planet behind the curtain, never stops rotating.

This work currently been exhibited at Naivistit Iittalassa, in Iittala, Finland.

Happy holidays. Whatever that means.

2021

Humanity needs, urgently, to reconsider its values, reasons, actions. Most of us still believes that we are separated by gender, class, nationality, race. Most of us still believes in religion, a savior god outside of our own selves. We are still struggling against racism, feminicide, abuse, violence, bigotry, xenophoby, homophoby, prejudice, poverty. Humans are humanity biggest enemy. We burn our forests, we exterminate our fellow beings, we destroy nature and idolize money, assets, status, while we bluntly ignore pain and injustice.

2021, 21st century and we have not been this primitive not even when we used to live in caves and had to hunt wild beasts for living. We are savages wearing famous brands and making selfies to post on social media.

I hope things change.
I hope snowball wars are the only hardships we still have to handle.

Happy new year.

Short story about broken dreams (and other fairy tales)

Oh, the never ending utopia… To be or not to be (loved), could it go like this? Oh, never mind…

The ever ending love is the ultimate goal.

Be aware that real, mature love includes all kinds of feelings, an ecossystem of sensations. From anger, frustration to tenderness, care, (and of course great sex). All the good and the bad, together, separately, alternately, because real love is like real life: it’s no fairy tale.

The prince, sometimes, is mistaken for the dragon and the dragon, many times, is not as cruel and deadly in real life.

At times it is the king who’s the real bitch and the dragon is just a pet.

Perhaps the prince is a toad, but again, sometimes, a toad is just a toad.

Doubt, confusion, pain: so many unnecessary tears, so many loving kisses under the shiny moon, all gone to waste.

We learn with that too.

The more we love, we fall, we allow, the more we learn.

There are also lazy breakfasts, small unexpected notes of appreciation, little surprises, lovely romantic dates and candle lit home made dinners.

Fairy tales don’t present you that. Real life does.

It’s necessary to pay attention to the details, to read the messages, even the not so hidden ones.

The real prince might be the boy next door, with a beer belly or a six pack (lovely eyes and smile too) and he will suddenly appear and knock on the door to rescue his fragile princess, dead by an enchanted apple or sleeping for eternity because of an unfair curse. Or maybe she is just deep sleeping after a long night of caipirinhas and laughter with her good friends.

She can’t hear the desperate call of her prince charming… But she sleeps to the sound og good music like Jason Mraz, Cold Play or, perhaps, good old Mozart or even better: sweet bossa nova.

If he really wants her, he will insist.

He will knock that door down if he needs to.

And when the time is right it all will happen.

She doesn’t need a crown to be royal.

She needs a good dress and nice shoes, but fats, wrinkles and freckles are also part of her charming package. She is good. Not much, only the absolute necessary.

There is not such a thing as fairy tales.

But love is definetely and absolutely possible.

Not perfect: possible.

We all deserve it but you have to grow up to get it right.

The Recipe

Recipe of Love – painting for sale and exhibited at Galleria Maria, Helsinki, Finland

Go take a look and visit this lovely, lovely gallery:   http://www.galleriamaria.fi ❀
(…)

I wish love had a recipe and we could follow it, step by step, making the best of it, getting it, spot on right.

What is the recipe for love

Respect?

Consideration?

Care?

Freedom?

Desire?

Passion?

Forgiveness?

Friendship?

Tolerance?

Time?

I know that each human being is a very unique maze and a full ecology of feelings, stories, needs, sensations. Therefore there must be more than one recipe. But what are the essencial ingredients? What makes it so right, so good, wrong or possible, simple or labourious?

What is the ultimate recipe for love? The delicate chemistry that makes us crave for something extraordinary?
A love so big, so complete that will finally save us from this emotional starvation and loneliness?
